Verizon Internet Phones?

Im going to either get the Palm Centro or the Glyde phone from Verizon. I heard that they make you buy the internet package for certain phones. Does anyone know if you have to for these phones? And i also heard that there are ways around having to buy the internet package. But that it can cause the phone to mess up if you dont buy the internet package? Does anyone know anything about this.
