How to fix ripples in carpet?

Our living room carpet is in good shape other than it has a few ripples in it...especially one long one about 3 feet away from the wall. We've kept a rug there so we haven't thought about it much, but now we're preparing to sell our home and can't afford to put in new carpet. Is there a way to repair this successfully?
