Grand Theft Auto question?

I have never played a grand theft auto game before and i was wondering before the fourth one comes out, what type of game play is it? As, in what do we do in the game? Also is it very explicit as in cussing and suggestive themes? I have only played sport, fighting, platforming/adventure, and beat-em-up games, would I like this type of game? Thanks a lot.
