Why is Albert Einstein so famous?

That sounds flippant, but I'm asking seriously. Most people will say it's because of e=mc2, but why is that so famous to begin with? How has an obscure (for most people) physics theory elevated Einstein to being one of the most famous people to have lived, when there have been so many other groundbreaking physicists who are far from household names?
